Miles Away-Motu           2013

Motu has moved miles away from the usual. Introspective, reflective and erudite, Motu is taking a soft and refined look at life autobiographically. Sounding more like an elder statesman, Bromberg and Kaukonen echo acoustically in the smooth waves of sound that caress the shore like mid-summer Fire Island ebb tide breakers. The CD opens with “Bayou Moon”, a soft Cajun lullaby with a message of regret and disappointment. When Dee Chetta sings, it’s like the smooth sounds of river pebbles worn round and smooth and earthy while Motu rumbles deep and gruff like Dave Van Ronk. “Miles Away” talks of loss and change, with a Pete and Molly Ungar Appalachian tristesse, accentuated by Lora Kendall’s sublime fiddle. Adam Tese brings joy to “Testify” while Motu expresses maturity and love, mellow and true while Dee reprises in “Crossroads Of Our Lives.” Wisdom comes with life and experience and beauty develops as an artist applies these to his craft. Motu has allowed life to flow over and through and his muse has matured; mellowed and expanded likewise as the focus has moved to the message and meaning and even better is a true and soulful summary- Garcia’s “Stella Blue.” Sublime and expansive, you’ll savor the flavor.
